Build Spotlight: the International Space Station – Brianna Matthews

Standing at a majestic 6 feet wide by 4 feet deep, this incredible reproduction of the ISS by DENLUG member Brianna Matthews is not only motorized, but based off of the scale of the LEGO Saturn V set! Click through for more pictures of this incredible project, and some words from the build master herself.

If you’ve ever attended one of DENLUG’s signature shows, you’ve likely had the opportunity to feast your eyes on one of member Brianna Matthews’ larger-than-life builds. From a fully-occupied, bustling Avengers Tower, to a lively diorama of the Razor Crest at Docking Bay 35, Brianna constantly pushes the limits with her builds, and it’s not hard to see the passion behind the work when looking at the finished models!

Standing at a majestic 6 feet wide by 4 feet deep, not only is this International Space Station build mostly based off of the scale of the LEGO Saturn V set, but it is also fully motorized to show the movement of the panels!

Once the scale was decided, Brianna redesigned it as she built to accommodate the look and feel of the ISS modules, and integrated the docking ports from the official LEGO City space station sets. Keeping it close to minifig scale was important, and the addition of the astronauts at work elevates this build to so much more than a technical model!

For the superstructure scale, Brianna developed it around the gearing assemblies, and it evolved based on what would fit around them to form the ISS truss segments. Per Brianna, all the gearing is focused around torque multiplying to get the solar arrays and radiators to rotate with all the mass.

Brianna’s Advice to Builders!

When asked for words of advice on starting a passion project, Brianna said – “express it how it suits you and your budget”! The International Space Station was a year-long labor of love for Brianna, and involved a lot of ordering parts and waiting. As an AFOL, she expresses her admiration for her subject in brick form on a large scale – and if you don’t want to miss more amazing builds, make sure to follow Brianna on Instagram!

Brianna’s Razor Crest at Docking Bay 45 (from The Mandalorian) will be on display at Bricks & Minifigs Littleton through May 2023, and you can stop by our display at FanExpo Denver on June 30th, July 1st, and July 2nd, 2023, to see her extraordinary builds in person!

Along with the model itself, Brianna put together informational cards to display alongside the model. Read on for more pictures and information about the International Space Station!
